The Future of Internet Marketing Adelaide

I have been thinking about where I'd like to take this blog now that I have other projects to work on and perhaps not as much time to spend here.

The key areas I'd like the blog to focus on include:

  • Interviews - With Adelaide based experts in the internet marketing field and the occasional non-Adelaidian when useful or interesting.
  • Guest Posts - From Adelaide based exerts in the internet marketing field, more details here.
  • Jobs - Continue to posts to and promote our job board.
  • Education - Information about internet marketing education and courses in Adelaide and online.
  • Events - Covering the various networking and internet marketing events in Adelaide and maybe organising some events of our own.
  • News - Covering internet marketing news in Adelaide.

I have made several posts in the past with my own opinions about SEO strategy and ideas. I will continue these, when I have the time, but they will be posted to my personal site nickmorris.me.

I'm toying with the idea of doing future interviews as recorded audio and putting them together in a kind of podcast. They would also be transcribed and posted to the blog.

Some of the event ideas I've had include networking events for internet marketing professionals in Adelaide, SEO round table discussions, small business networking events and free lectures/workshops from internet marketing professionals for small business owners.

Overall the site has two main focuses - information, news and networking within the internet marketing community in Adelaide and packaging some of the community's knowledge and bringing it to small business owners and managers who can benefit.

If you have any ideas or comments about the direction of the site, please add them below.

2011 in Review

I've been rather busy lately with work and haven't been able to give this blog the attention it deserves. However, this post will continue to make sure that I've posted at least once a month, every month since its inception in early December 2010.

Here are the top 10 posts for this year:

  1. Move, Eat, Learn Interview with STA Travel's Adam Fyfe
  2. Tom Williamson Interview
  3. Local Keyword Competition Analysis
  4. Broad, Phrase & Exact Match Data
  5. Local Search in Adelaide, South Australia
  6. Julia George on Social Media Marketing
  7. Adelaide Zombie Walk Organiser Ann on Social Media
  8. Engaging your Audience on Social Media
  9. Interview with Karen Zaskolny on Copywriting
  10. Interview with Chris Schwarz on PPC
It's been a fun and interesting year and I've got a number of plans for this blog to keep the content coming.

See you in 2012.

My New Blog Design

You may have noticed that my blog design has changed significantly. Once I had the chance to use my old blog design for a few months I discovered it had a number of short comings so I decided to change to a new design to improve the usability and effectiveness of my blog.

Changing a website's design is very easy if you are using a content management system (CMS) such as Blogger, which I use, or Wordpress, which is also very popular. All you need to do is go to a website that lists lots of different template designs and pick the one that's right for you.

These are the key features I wanted the new design to have:

  • Two column design so the page was less cluttered.
  • Sidebar on the right so the content is the first thing that users and search engines will see.
  • Large text and clean font for easier reading of posts.
  • Large posting (content) area to allow for longer lines meaning less scrolling and wider content such as images, videos and tables.
  • Horizontal navigation that is highly customisable.Link
  • Simple and clean design for faster page load times and easier reading.
I went through quite a few different designs before I settled on this one. This design is called 'Twenty Ten' and has been adapted to Blogger (by The Man Who Walked Thru Wall) from the most recent default Wordpress template. I would have liked to have something a bit more unique, many Adelaide Bloggers use this design, but in the end this one has the least number of problems.

Change Log

These are changes I have made to the template code:
  • 11/04/2011 -Optimised title tags to show the post name instead of the blog name.
  • 11/04/2011 - Added copyright info and link to this post in the footer.
  • 11/04/2011 - Removed the large header image. I don't really have a relevant image to put there at the moment and I like the idea of having a small header to have more content viewable 'above the fold.'

IMA Updates

I hope everyone had a good Christmas and is preparing for a fun and safe new years. Just a quick post to highlight some recent updates.

We now have a presence on Youtube. I created an account that doesn't have any of its own videos but does collect together videos from various people and companies in Adelaide for your viewing pleasure. The channel can be found at www.youtube.com/user/webmarketingadelaide or by navigating to the YouTube tab on our facebook page.

In the new year we have several interviews coming up with successful users of social media and Ian Reilley, Director of Media Mouse.

Trusted Sources

There's a lot of internet marketing advice out there on the interwebs already, so rather than just adding to that with my own advice I'm going to produce my articles by only referring to a few trusted sources. I have picked four, below, to start. This list will increase over time but these are the ones I am starting with. Theres no particular reason why I chose these four as 'trusted' sites other than that I know they are well trusted within the industry.

Take a look around each, you'll find a tonne of information just waiting to be devoured.

Internet Marketing Adelaide on Facebook

I have just created a page for Internet Marketing Adelaide on Facebook. At this point all it has is some basic information but I hope to develop it into a popular and effective tool for furthering the mission of this website.

The page will serve as a case study for Facebook pages. I will post an update at least once a week reporting how the page is going and what changes I have been making. You can help by liking the page by clicking the button in the widget in the right sidebar.
