6 Adelaide Business Networking Tips

Networking is one of those buzzwords that everyone talks about doing but don't seam to have a clear idea of why.

When I started my SEO business I found myself doing a lot of networking without having a clear idea of what exactly the value was and how it was going to help my business.

I regularly attend the Flying Solo small business meetup which is held monthly in different places around Adelaide (next one coming up on September 5th). In the lead up to the meetup, I always see people umming and ahhing over whether they can fit it in to their busy schedule which seems to point to the fact that most people think there's some value there but that its far from the most productive thing they could be doing with their time.

Good things that can come from networking;

  • New clients/customers (either those that you meet or by referral from someone you meet)
  • Increased reputation, personal branding and awareness
  • Business/joint venture partners
  • Business advice and tips
  • An opportunity to make friends, get support and vent with like minded people

My Networking Tips

1) Figure out what your networking objectives are. If you want to meet small business owners, then maybe attending a networking event for professionals is not the best use of your time.

2) Arrive early. Its harder to enter existing conversations than it is to start them. If you get there early, you can strike up a conversation with people as they arrive.

3) Try and meet everybody. You never know what you could be missing out on so a good strategy is to try and meet everyone then go back to the people who are most interesting to you if you have time. This is not a hard and fast rule. If you're engaged in conversation with someone interesting and relevant then you don't want to just kick them to the curb but if there's a break in the conversation, use the opportunity to move onto someone new rather than returning to the same person.

4) Focus on others, not yourself. I think you can get far more value by listening, asking questions and helping other people out than you can by talking about yourself and your business. If you can provide value to someone, they're much more likely hire you, refer you work and talk about you in a positive light to others. Further, by listening and asking questions you can learn more about the problems people are having and how you can help them solve those problems.

5) Collect business cards. While your instinct might be to try and give out as many of your business cards as possible, don't forget to collect the business cards of those that you meet so you can connect with them later. I also like to group business cards by the event so if I'm going back next time I can have a look at the cards of those I met so I remember their names and what they do when I see them again.

6) Follow up and follow up some more. In the first few days after the event, try and follow up with those that you met. Add onto the conversation that you had with another thought or a link to something they might find useful or interesting. Try and keep in contact with people by connecting with them every now and then via email, social media, commenting on their blog or even a phone call.

Adelaide Networking Events
  • Flying Solo Meetup - Small business owners, held monthly, usually 5-10 people
  • Adelaide Open Networkers - Some small business owners but mostly professionals, held every 2 months or so, 20-40 people (last time I was there)
  • The Startup Club Adelaide - They haven't had any events for a while but I think they are starting them again soon? I've not been to any events so don't know much about them but I've heard they're good
  • Young Leaders at the Office - Young IT professionals, every 1-2 months, small cost for non ACA members, 15-30 people
  • Silicon Beach Adelaide Meetup - Tech based entrepreneurs, geeks and businesses, held monthly, 10-30 people
  • Adelaide Word of Mouth - Business owners & professionals, a few events each month, free, I've not been to any events yet but I hear they are quite popular.

Online Marketing Resoruces

As you know, I haven't been posting much here lately - there are several reasons, mostly because I've been really busy, but also because I've been writing articles for my Online Marketing business website: Wicked Cow Marketing. I've already built up a pretty good collection of resources, here are some of the most recent:

A Couple of Milestones

Just thought I'd point out a couple of milestones for the blog.

  1. I reached 100 posts last week with my post 'Local Keyword Competition Analysis.'
  2. Internet Marketing Adelaide came in at number 52 in Tony McCreath's 'Top 100 Adelaide Website Design Firms.'
I'm looking forward to many more milestones to come.

Networking with Social Media (IMA)

One of my objectives for this blog was to facilitate networking with internet marketing professionals in Adelaide. I have compiled a table below listing the people who I have met as a result of this blog and related activities and would now consider to be part of my network. There is also information about how the initial contact was made, how we tend to interact and whether or not we have met in person. Beneath the table is a run down of the different tools for professional networking and how I think they should be used.

My loose definition of someone I count as 'in my network' is someone I have interacted with on numerous different occasions and through different mediums.

NameInitial ContactInteractionMet in Person
Tony McCreathEmail (re interview)Email, Twitter, BlogYes, Net2ADL
Clayton WehnerEmail (re interview)Email, PhoneYes, Interview

Andrew MontesiLinkedin (via Twitter)LinkedinNo
Michael SoininenLinkedin (via Blog)LinkedinNo
Shai CogginsTwitterTwitterYes, Net2ADL
Peter CornishEmail (re interview)Email, Blog CommentsNo

This table only covers people I have met since starting the blog, people I knew before that are not included in this table.

Email

Not a great tool for networking as unsolicited email can be taken as Spam. The law in Australia allows for emails related to their business so there is some leeway here. I used email initially to look for interviewees but I wouldn't consider using it again as a firth contact method until all other avenues had been tried.

Twitter

Twitter is my favourite tool for networking at the moment. It's really easy to start a dialogue with someone you have an interest in networking with. Just join in the conversation whenever you can add some value and don't be salesy or spammy.

Linkedin

Linkedin is meant to be 'the' professional networking tool but its more useful for visualising your existing network than for finding new people to network with. You can use it to find potential connections by examining the 2nd and 3rd connections in your network, but Twitter is much more useful for making initial contact and interacting with your new connection. I invite people to connect with me on linkedin on my blog (sidebar and below each post) and use it to consolidate connections made elsewhere.

Facebook

Networking via facebook can be problematic if you want to keep your profile private and your professional networks separate from your personal ones. The recent updates allowing users to 'use facebook as a page' have made it slightly easier, although its more about networking your brand rather than yourself. I tried to sidestep this by creating a page for myself but it hasn't really worked so far. In the future I will probably only use facebook for first contact as a last resort.

In Person

Meeting people in person at networking events and conferences is still a great way to network. You can learn so much about a person by meeting them face to face that you can't get very easily through online mediums. However, I think the combination of both offline and online interaction is the path to the strongest network connections. As of now I have only met a few of my network connections in person but I hope to eventually meet all of them.

Web Development - IMA

Description of the Web Development stage for the Internet Marketing Adelaide project.

Content

  • Articles- Most of the written content is in blog post articles. I've been trying to update the blog every two days. My articles are generally short, have a 1 or 2 sentence summary at the top and use dot points where possible to make them easy to read.
  • Pages- The most important information that I think people will want to refer to is in pages which are linked to at the top (and one in the sidebar). My current pages are:
  • Videos- I created a dedicated YouTube account, Web Marketing Adelaide, for videos relating to this project.
  • Titles- The page titles are in the form of 'post title | blog name'
  • Headings- The post and page titles are the key headings on each page

Technology
  • Web Properties- Website/blog, Facebook Page, Twitter Profile
  • Onsite- The blog uses the Blogger CMS
  • Backend- Hosted for free by Blogger (Google owned), the domain name was registered through Google and the image and email hosting is provided by Google.

Structure
  • Navigation- Horizontal top menu navigation for the most important pages plus sidebar links for other important pages
  • Layout- Standard 2 column blog layout

Design

I selected a simple, free template for blogger and just went with it. I especially liked that the header is not very high so you see more content without scrolling.

Test & Improve

I haven't yet done any usability testing but would like to in the future.

Facebook Strategy- IMA

I've been struggling to come up with a strategy for the Internet Marketing Adelaide Facebook Page that will help achieve my objectives. I wanted to make it a place where people would come and ask questions and others would answer them to create a centre of knowledge and information. I have just decided that this exactly what I will do but I will create another page specially for it.

The new page is called Internet Marketing Advice. It will not be linked to this website or any other website officially as I want to encourage internet marketing experts to post and share their knowledge without fear that they are helping to pad someone else's pockets. So its going to be a stand alone page administered by me, to achieve my objectives. Here are some of the features I've planned so far:
  • Custom landing page/tab for non-fans to encourage them to 'like' the page and join the conversation by asking a question and/or answering a question
  • 'Experts Panel' page/tab featuring Adelaide internet marketing and website experts who are regular contributors. The page will include of photo of each expert along with a short bio and link to their website.
  • Weekly/monthly feature called 'Top Contributors,' with several categories such as 'Best Question,' 'Best Link,' 'Best Advice' etc. The top contributors will be promoted through photos, notes, updates and tagging.
I anticipate this facebook page will help achieve all 5 of my objectives. The conversions I will be looking for and tracking are:
  • Someone clicks through to my website, portfolio or linkedin profile from the Experts Panel
  • Someone clicks through to another expert's website or other linked pages
  • An internet marketing, marketing or business professional meets and networks with me via the facebook page- might be a little difficult to track
  • The number of likes, comments, posts and interactions grows and remains healthy

    • Someone asks me for advice
    • My articles are emailed, shared, liked or otherwise voted for
